Only God Forgives is Nicholas Winding Refn's latest film which was shown at the Cannes Film Festival this past summer. This film has received mostly negative reviews mainly stating that it lacks substance and was a way for the director to express his fetish for violence. Personally I felt that like drive, this is a movie that is best watched with the understanding that it is an art house film. There many elements of the plot that instead of being explained are left for interpretation.Watching the film you will notice that a lot of scenes transition to what I can only describe as dream sequences making it unclear as to what is and isn't happening. Only God Forgives is the type of film that should be re watched in order to fully understand the story or to at least speculate what the meaning of the film is.This gives the film a very particular audience that it appeals to. Despite it's lack of mass appeal there are elements about the film that many can appreciate such as the soundtrack and cinematography, but if you want a film that is easy to follow and provides a clear ending Only God Forgives isn't that movie. Even with the story being so unclear I have to say I really enjoyed this film. Going into the film I was aware of the negative press it received so my expectations were minimal, but after watching the movie I was impressed. I feel that it was shot beautifully and that the antagonist of the movie and who he may resemble made this movie worth being re-watched. This is a movie that needs interpretation. In order to enjoy this movie you have question what each scene means and you have to be okay with not knowing exactly what the movie means. Overall if you don't mind seeing unique film, a lack of dialogue, and having to make interpretations then I recommend this movie.
